Title: "Abandon"
Author: Meg Cabot
Rating: ★★★½
Okay, maybe it's just me, but it felt like this book was really short! Maybe it was just because I liked it? Or maybe it really is just a short book. I mean, it took me like 7 hours to read. That's it. Anyway, I liked this book because it has that whole "Hades and Persephone" thing going on, of which I am a HUGE fan.
This story follows Pierce Oliviera, a 17, (maybe 18. It doesn't really specify) year old girl who had a NDE, (Near Death Experience) at the age of 15, which then snowballs into all sorts of crazy for her. When she "Dies", she arrives in the underworld and has an encounter with a certain tall-dark-and-handsome someone who she had previously met in a cemetery on Isla Huesos when she was a child, where he brought a dove back to life for her. After Having her NDE, trouble won't stop following Pierce everywhere she goes. She eventually ends up having to relocate to her mother's home town of Isla Huesos, a Florida island, to try and regain some sense of normalcy in her life. Unfortunately for Pierce, her trouble is just beginning as she learns the truth about the man she met in the underworld, who he is, and what part she plays in the grand scheme of things.
This book was written in a unique fashion. It starts off in the present day, (after Pierce's NDE) then slowly fills in the details of past events by Pierce's flashbacks. I won't lie, at first I was kind of inpatient because every time she would have a flashback, she would only tell half of the flashback, then come back to it later. But I quickly got used to it and saw that it was actually a pretty clever technique to keep you reading because of the anticipation. I did feel that it was a little rushed, but at least it's a multi-book series so I can keep reading and get the full story.
All in all, it was a fast, entertaining read that kept me captivated.
I can't wait to read the next book!
